Application of the evaluation method to a construction project for a new or existing building requires the use of one or several specific pieces of assessment software.

In order to comply with the methods implemented for the trial scheme and register a construction operation with the Observatory, it is essential to begin by carrying out an energy evaluation. The second step, based on the data gathered from the first evaluation, is to carry out an environmental evaluation.

It is only at the outcome of this process that you will possess the essential data and files to register your operation with the Observatory.

1- Tools to carry out an energy performance evaluation

Software enabling users to calculate their BEPOS rating and other energy indicators must:

  • be approved for the calculation of consumption levels for regulatory purposes (RT 2012),
  • include the extension provided by the minister, allowing for the calculation of the BEPOS rating in accordance with the method used in the reference framework.

2- Tools for evaluating environmental performance

The “Energy Positive & Low Carbon” (E+C-) trial scheme includes a calculation of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the building’s life cycle. In order to help industry professionals ensure that their trial scheme projects are carried out in accordance with the methodological framework outlined by the French government, the Directorate for Habitat, Urban Planning and Landscapes (DHUP) has identified software tools for life cycle analysis that comply with the reference framework used in the trial scheme.*

These software tools are subjected to voluntary testing by software editors.

Compatibility guidance for environmental calculation software vis-a-vis the “Positive Energy-Low Carbon” reference framework

In order to guarantee consistency and reproducibility in the results that will feed into the trial scheme’s Observatory, the ministry has provided editors with a document (available in the “More Information” section) containing all information necessary to register their software for use in the initiative, and how it will operate.

This guidance is relevant to all software editors aiming to market operational software for the calculation of life cycle analyses in accordance with the frame of reference being used for this trial scheme.

1- Tools to carry out an energy performance evaluation

The following software tools have been approved for regulatory calculations according to the Th-BCE 2012 method, and allow users to:

  • carry out the energy assessment required in order to calculate the building’s BEPOS rating.
  • generate output data necessary for evaluating the environmental impact in terms of energy consumption
  • create a Standardised Thermal Study Recap document (RSET) in an output format that is compatible with evaluation software for environmental performance of validated buildings (cf. Tools for evaluating environmental performance).

Some of these tools have their own dedicated interface.

2- Tools for evaluating environmental performance

The following software tools, each of which has participated in the oversight procedure to validate their compliance with the trial scheme’s reference framework, allow users:

  • to carry out environmental evaluations necessary for the calculation of the “Eges” and “Eges PCE” greenhouse gas emissions indicators.
  • to generate information about the operation and results of the environmental evaluation in an output format that is compatible with the trial scheme’s Observatory (RSEE : Récapitulatif Standardisé Énergie – Environnement).
